If you want to enter the drawings for the books, please leave a comment on one of the post during the week with your email address. I will not enter you without an email address (my way to contact you if you win). If you don’t want to leave an email address, another way you can enter is to email me at margaretdaley@gmail.com. The drawings end Sunday (March 25th) evening.

Home to Montana CoverInterview with the hero from Home to Montana by Charlotte Carter:

1. Nick Carbini, tell me the most interesting thing about you.

I’m just an ordinary guy, really. I enlisted in the Army after I graduated from high school and signed up to be a cook. (Before my mom died, she taught me how to make the best Italian spaghetti in the world.) The Army sent me to Paris to study at Le Cordon Bleu. I figured I’d end up cooking at an officers’ club, maybe even the Pentagon. It didn’t work out that way.

2. What do you do for fun?

I took Alisa Machak’s  9-year-old son Greg fishing. Alisa is the owner of the Pine Tree Diner in Bear Lake, Montana; I’ve been working around the place to help her out.. It was supposed to be a father-son thing, but he doesn’t have a dad so I sort of filled in. Of course, I’d never been fishing in my life. I expected to get skunked. Instead we won! Greg was pretty happy about that.

3.  What do you put off doing because you dread it?

I dread going to sleep. I have nightmares. Sometimes I have flashbacks when I’m awake – blood everywhere, men screaming, bullets whizzing past me. It’s scary.

 4.  What are you afraid of most in life?

I’m afraid I might hurt someone while I’m having a flashback. That’s why I never stick around long in one place. I keep drifting to somewhere else hoping the flashbacks won’t follow me. So far that hasn’t worked.

5.  What do you want out of life?

Peace.

6.  What is the most important thing to you?

That I’m not a mean drunk like my dad.

7.  Do you read books? If so, what is your favorite type of book?

I’ve never done much reading, but I’m a champ at jigsaw puzzles. Spent a lot of time putting them together in prison.

8.  If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

That I could be the kind of man Alisa deserves.

9.  Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?

My dog Rags sort of adopted me. I was sleeping at a rest stop in Colorado in my pickup. He was there by himself, dirty and hungry, so I fed him. He decided to come with me when I drifted on to somewhere else. He senses when I’m having a nightmare and wakes me up. I’d hate to lose him. He’s a good buddy but I think a kid needs a dog. Maybe I’ll let Rags stay with Greg when I move on.

10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?

I’d go back to Afghanistan and find some way to save the men who died when our outpost was overrun. Sometimes I see their faces . . .
