COVER That SummerInterview with the heroine from That Summer by Jo Huddleston:

Caroline, tell me the most interesting thing about you.

I’m an only child of a prestigious family in my hometown of Newton, Tennessee.

What do you do for fun?

Anything I want to. I guess I’m a pampered child. When I’m away for school at Agnes Scott College in Atlanta, there is all kind of chances to have fun.

What do you put off doing because you dread it?

I don’t like to shop but like to have been shopping. I love bringing the packages home and laying all the new clothes on the bed.

What are you afraid of most in life?

I’m afraid of my family losing our money. All this talk from New York about some stocks falling and everyone there losing all they have—surely all that trouble will not come down here to Tennessee.

What do you want out of life?

I want what all girls want—a husband, a family with children. Isn’t that what is expected of women in the 1920s?

What is the most important thing to you?

I’m home from college for summer break now. I’ve met Jimmy. He makes my world turn and he’s the most important thing to me right now. He grew up on a farm and he’s a little shy now but I think he’s getting used to me.

Do you read? If so, what is your favorite type of book to read?

Yes, I read. I have to read my textbooks—Mother and Daddy would be disappointed if I didn’t do well in college. I read the newspaper. But when I have time I love looking at and reading The Saturday Evening Post. I know most young people don’t but I like the pictures Norman Rockwell draws. He makes life look simple.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I would not be from an elite family in town. I’d like to have Norman Rockwell’s simple life and not have to live up to the rich little girl image my parents have pounded into me.

Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?

No, I don’t have a pet. Mother wouldn’t allow an animal of any kind in the house. She’s really adamant about that.

If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?

I would probably like to go back to the time of traveling west in covered wagons. In that time I wouldn’t have to live up to the image of riches that my parents insist that I do. Everyone going west in wagons were probably pretty much equal and I’d like to experience that.
