1.  Bethany Light, tell me the most interesting thing about you. Unfortunately, what I’m known for is having my dad run off with his church secretary. Ever walk into the ladies room on a Sunday morning and have everyone suddenly stop talking and avoid eye contact with you? Though I think I’d call that more awkward than interesting.

2.  What do you do for fun? I love to ski—the lights that reflect off the clouds at night up on the basin above Boise have been taunting me ever since I broke my ankle flying off a treadmill. Most people probably think I love to run, but that’s really just a stress-reliever. Taking my cousin’s dance aerobics class is much more fun. I always enjoy hanging out with my family. Though they seemed to have scattered like cockroaches since dad’s affair came to light.

 3.  What do you put off doing because you dread it? I am putting off marriage. If my dad, who served God all his life and led hundreds to Christ can’t stay faithful to a spouse, what chance do I have? But I’m getting counsel from my new pastor, and for some reason talking with Eric gives me hope for my future.

4.  What are you afraid of most in life? I’m afraid of never being daddy’s little girl again. I’m afraid that I’m not part of his new life and never will be. And I’m afraid that everyone else is okay moving on without him.

 5.  What do you want out of life? I want to fix my family. I want to get my cousins to speak to each other again. I want my sister to come home—without the guy she met online. I want my brother to kick his addiction. I want my mom to reverse her plastic surgery. And I want Eric to keep holding my hand through this, since he’s the only one who seems to care right now.

6.  What is the most important thing to you? The right thing. I have to do the right thing. I’m not going to make the mistakes my dad made. Even if the wrong thing feels oh-so-right.

7.  Do you read? If so, what is your favorite type of book to read? I read my Bible every now and then. I should read it more. Like my cousin. Dee Dee just got saved and now she doesn’t put the book down. I don’t remember ever being that hungry for the Word. Maybe if I had been, then I would have gotten to lead her to the Lord instead of Eric’s bubble head fiancée. But mostly I read fitness magazines.

8.  If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? I wouldn’t judge so much. I’ve got plank-eye syndrome pretty bad. You know, where you point out the speck in someone else’s eye and ignore the plank in your own. Yep. I’m just so much better at fixing other people’s problems than fixing mine. But I’ve got Eric for that. He’s like some kind of mercy superhero. But I guess he would have to be with the woman he’s going to marry.

9.  Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet? I’m not allowed to have pets in my apartment, though my goofy brother set my phone ringer to “dog bark,” and I keep getting reported to the landlord. Besides that I have a dying fern that wears my dad’s church nametag from the last service he ever did. Nobody knows about Michael the fern. But I talk to him sometimes as if he were Michael my dad.

10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why? If only I could go back in time. I’d get Corrine fired from her position as Dad’s secretary before her husband died and she turned to Dad for support. I mean, what kind of woman does that? Even if I fell in love with my pastor, I wouldn’t steal him from his wife and family. Of course, Eric isn’t married yet…
