1.Mariah Malone, tell me the most interesting thing about you.

I’m not sure there’s anything interesting to tell. I live on my family’s ranch in Wyoming Territory. We get up, we work, we go to church on Sunday, and we do it all again day after day, week after week. But something interesting did happen this week. A stranger showed up. His name is Slade Donovan, and he claims that my father stole his father’s gold and left him for dead! Can you imagine? Yes, Papa admitted that he stole some gold, but part of it belonged to him, and he never said anything about shooting anyone!

2.  What do you do for fun?

Fun? You mean entertainment? Well, the fourth Sunday of every month, weather permitting, we have a church social on Sunday after church. I enjoy that. Hmmmm, there really hasn’t been time for anything fun since my father passed away and my sister went away to school in Philadelphia. But before that, my grandmother took us on picnics down by the creek a lot. Mariah gets a faraway look in her eye. I really miss those times when we were all together and happy.

3. What do you put off doing because you dread it?

Gardening. Mariah looks sheepish. But please don’t tell my grandmother I said so. Hoeing has got to be the most tiresome job in the world. You hoe for an hour, look up, and you still have four more rows left. There’s only one thing I dread worse than hoeing the garden, and that’s watering it. Ms. Daley, I’d be obliged if you would pray for more rain. We got a shower this morning, but it sure wouldn’t hurt to have more.

4.  What are you afraid of most in life?

People finding out what my father did, or what that Slade Donovan said he did. But he, Donovan, had proof: a deed and a wanted poster for my father. I would have taken him to court, but the proof was right there in front of me, and I’d written that letter asking for forgiveness.

5.  What do you want out of life?

Security. Now that we’ve lost our home, I want a place to call my own, a place I can take care of my grandmother and my sister, where we can all be together.

6.  What is the most important thing to you?

Family, of course. That’s why I agreed to Slade Donovan’s demands. If it had just been me, I would have fought him tooth and nail, but I had my grandmother and my sister to consider and our family’s reputation. And now that he’s taken the ranch, our name is all we’ve got left.

7.  Do you read? If so, what is your favorite type of book to read?

I do enjoy reading about faraway places, but don’t have a lot of books at home. When I finally find a moment to sit at the end of the day, I pick up some darning, or read a chapter or two of the Bible to my grandmother. Her eyesight’s so bad these days. Reading is really difficult for her.

8.  If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

My temper. I’m ashamed of the way I acted in front of Slade Donovan. But he deserved it: accusing my father of trying to kill his, and then threatening to throw us out of our home. But somehow that man just rubs me the wrong way. Every time I see him, he makes me mad.

9.  Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?

Oh, we have lots of cats around the farm, but no dogs right now. One of the hands brought a dog that ran off all the cats, but he’s gone now, and the cats are coming back around. Did you know that there’s this one wild tomcat named Yellow that I’ve been trying to tame? Yellow was born in the woods when the dog would’t let the cats within a hundred feet of the house, but it’s taking me a long time to gain Yellow’s trust. He’s a loner, that. Much like Slade Donovan seems to be.

10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?

Oh, that’s easy. I would go back to before my father got sick, before Amanda went away to school. We were happy, and we were all together. I didn’t realize what a blessing that was until I didn’t have it anymore.
