Heroine Interview from As You Are at Christmas by Davalynn Spencer:
1. Angela, tell me the most interesting thing about you.
You see, that’s just it. I don’t think I’m very interesting. I’m just me, a third-grade teacher. I guess the most interesting thing about me is my surrogate grandmother, Mollie. She had a way of making me feel like I was valuable.
2. What do you do for fun?
I was going to the gym with what’s-his-name, but we all know how that worked out. I like to bake, especially in the winter. I love filling the house with spicy aromas and feeling cozy on a cold winter day.
3. What do you put off doing because you dread it?
Grading papers – ugh! Teaching would be so much more fun if I didn’t have to grade papers every evening.
4. What are you afraid of most in life?
The dating game. Sounds crazy, I know, because I really do want to marry and have a family. But I don’t like all the insincerity out there.
5. What do you want out of life?
I want to make someone happy, preferably a husband.
6. What is the most important thing to you?
Humanly speaking, Mollie is the most important thing to me. She took me in when she didn’t have to. She made me feel valuable. And by being part of her family, I learned about the even greater love of Jesus. That’s made all the difference.
7. Do you read? If so, what is your favorite type of book to read?
I read a lot of kids’ book to my students, of course, but when I really need to get away from it all I like a good western romance. Is that even a genre? I also like Mark Twain and C.S. Lewis—the way they can so precisely say what would take me pages and pages to explain.
8. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
My eye color—they’re gray. That seems so colorless to me.
9. Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?
I don’t have a pet at home in Greeley, but over Christmas break here in Berthoud we brought home a stray. Roady. I know he’s really Mollie’s dog, but if she turned him out, I’d take him home.
10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?
Sure as shootin’ I’d zip right back to the late 1800s and become a rancher’s sweetheart. But then I’d miss out on the handsome architect, Matthew Dawson. Boy, that’s a hard question.
