1. Meri, tell me the most interesting thing about you. I was once a concubine in Pharaoh’s court. He was eighty years old, so on my only night with him, nothing much happened, but it was still the most terrifying night of my life. He hadn’t taken any concubines in years—I’m still not sure why he took me. I think I was some sort of “gift” from the magician.

2.  What do you do for fun? Well, in the harem I learned to make perfume from flowers and oil. I really enjoyed that. My favorite was jasmine, but we had so many beautiful kinds of flowers in Ramses’s gardens. It’s a very delicate process, because if you try to go too quickly you can end up burning it, and then it smells just awful.

3.  What do you put off doing because you dread it? Cleaning the dishes! I never had to do that before! My mom did it at home, and in the palace, of course, slaves did it. Here in the desert, we use sand to scrub them clean.

4.  What are you afraid of most in life? Being alone again.

5.  What do you want out of life? A happy family. I had one until my mother died. Then everything went … really horrible. But Yahweh rescued me, redeemed my life, and gave me everything I could ever have hoped for.

6.  What is the most important thing to you? Being a good mother. I lost mine when I was so young, but she was wonderful. I want to be that to Adi.

7.  Do you read? If so, what is your favorite type of book to read? What are books?

8.  If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? I wish I were taller. My husband doesn’t care, but I think it would be nice.

9.  Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet? I’ve never really had a pet. On our farm there were lots of animals, but we were too busy to have pets. Here in the desert there aren’t any animals nice enough to keep as pets. In the palace there were lots of cats. When the others would take their children out on the barges on the river, one in particular would come in and sit on my lap. I kind of miss him.

10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why? I’d go back to see my mother. I’d love to talk to her again now that I’m a mother. Could I take my baby with me?
