FlorasWishInterview with the heroine from Flora’s Wish by Kathleen Y’Barbo:

1. Flora Brimm tell me the most interesting thing about you.

I have absolutely no fear of heights. In fact, recently I was in need of a swift and discreet exit from the fourth floor ballroom of the Crescent Hotel in Eureka Springs, Arkansas—where Grandmama and I had gone to take the waters—and the only way to avoid that awful Mrs. Honeycutt was to step outside on the ledge and scoot around to make my exit. Yes, it was four floors up, but that silly Pinkerton agent…well, you’ll just have to wait and see what he did. It all turned out just fine.

2.  What do you do for fun?

I wish I could say that I have taken to one of the womanly pursuits my grandmother insists upon. However painting has never been my forte, and reading Jane Austen is beyond my tolerance for patience, although Mama and my sister Violet love her books. The must fun I’ve have recently has been the spirited discussions I’ve had with Mr. McMinn of the Pinkerton Agency. That and helping him to solve a crime he believes has been committed.

3.  What do you put off doing because you dread it?

This may be hard to believe, but I dread marrying. Four fiancés have missed meeting me at the altar, rest their souls, and as much as I know I must marry—and soon—I do dread making a poor decision or, worse, finding out that number five has also met an untimely end.

4.  What are you afraid of most in life?

I am most afraid of disappointing my family and allowing Brimmfield to slip into the wrong hands. Only I can save our home, you understand, but I fear I may not manage the feat in time.

5.  What do you want out of life?

I would love a nice soak in a tub of violet scented water and a complete lack of responsibility for saving anything or anyone for just a few hours. I seem to have the time for neither at the moment.

6.  What is the most important thing to you?

Family. Absolutely nothing is more important.

7.  Do you read? If so, what is your favorite type of book to read?

Oh yes I do read, but as I’ve already mentioned, I absolutely cannot understand the popularity of Miss Jane Austen. Why, she seems to be so interested in love that, well, I just cannot see why my sister Violet adores her so.

8.  If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I would trade places with Violet so that she would be the one dancing across the ballroom with the handsome Pinkerton or making her way around the ledge of a fourth floor ballroom.

9.  Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?

Back at Brimmfield we have horses, barn cats, and dogs. Someday when I settle down, I would love to add other pets, perhaps a canary or a pair of lovebirds.

10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?

I would go back to the day when Grandfather wrote his will and try to talk him out of that nonsense. Or to the day when Violet and I got into the trouble that changed our lives. Or perhaps I would go back to the day when I first met Will Tucker. Yes, I think that would be an interesting choice, don’t you?
