Interview with Pete (secondary character) from Counterfeit Cowboy by Lacy Williams:

1. Pete, tell me the most interesting thing about you.

I’m an orphan. My ma and my sister died, and I’ve been taking care of myself ever since. If you want to get technical… I guess you’d call me a pickpocket. A kid’s gotta eat somehow.

2.  What do you do for fun?

This probably seems silly, but recently I’ve come alongside this guy Jesse Baker while riding the train from Boston out West… he’s fresh outta prison and used to be a confidence man. Well, he’s real sweet on our seatmate Erin O’Grady and it’s real fun to rile him up and pretend like I’m gonna tell Erin about his tarnished past. Okay, it’s blackmail. But it’s still fun!

3.  What’s your favorite food?

Anything. Even the food they’ve been feeding us on the train, that most people think isn’t too good, tastes great to me. I do miss my ma’s bread pudding…

4.  What is your favorite game?

I guess if I was a regular kid I’d be pretty good at hide-and-seek. Picking pockets on the train could be dangerous if I didn’t know about all the small cubbies, drawers and corners. So far the conductor hasn’t found me out…

5.  You’re just a kid now—what do you want to be when you grow up?

I don’t rightly know. Ever since I met him, Jesse’s been pretending to be a cowboy. It might be fun to grow up and have adventures like a cowboy must. Ya know, ridin’ a horse, chasing cows all day, building campfires and seeing pretty sunsets. Maybe I’ll do that.

6.  What is the most important thing to you?

Don’t tell no one, but I miss my ma. Real bad sometimes, especially when I can’t sleep at night. My secret dream is to find a family for myself… but who would want a kid with a history like mine?

7.  Do you read books? If so, what is your favorite type of book?

Can’t read. But Miss Erin has been trying to keep me busy on the train and she’s been reading this crazy story about a baby being born in a barn, and these rich old men traveling to see the baby, and this deranged king who is trying to kill it. It *is* kind of an interesting story, I guess. Don’t rightly understand how it relates to Christmas, but Miss Erin might get there if she keeps reading to me.

8.  If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I’d be taller and a better fighter! Last time I had some luck with my, erm… job, some bigger street kids stole my money. It’s rough being on the streets, or on a traincar.

9.  Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?

I’d love to have a dog someday, but since I can’t even feed myself most times, I’d better not think about that now.

10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?

I’d go back and find some way to save my ma. Surely if we could’ve afforded a doctor, she wouldn’t have died. I’d *find* a way to get a doctor for her. Sure, I’m doing okay being on my own, but I secretly miss the security of having someone that I know loves me to take care of me. I’m trying not to hope that Jesse Baker could be that person…
