Interview with the heroine from When a Heart Stops by Lynette Eason:

1. Serena Hopkins, tell me the most interesting thing about you. I think most people find my job the most interesting thing about me. I’m a Medical Examiner. I deal with deal every day.

2.  What do you do for fun? Fun? Oh, right. Fun. I think I remember what that is. I have some friends that I like to hang out with occasionally and I love to take the boat out on the lake. Especially when Dominic Allen is available to go with me. That guy has really gotten under my skin—in a good, yet rather scary, way.

3.  What do you put off doing because you dread it? Giving people bad news. I know, crazy, right? I mean I deal with death on a daily basis. But it’s a love/hate relationship. I love the puzzle the human body presents and the mysteries I uncover in my work. I hate that most of the people who die leave behind loved ones who grieve them. That’s the hard part. Watching people suffer and hurt. But the work is very satisfying when I’m able to be a part of bringing a killer to justice.

4.  What are you afraid of most in life? Making mistakes. Making the wrong decisions. I’ve made a few bad ones so now I’m a little paranoid.

5.  What do you want out of life? To know that I’ve done everything I could for Christ. That I’ve given him 100% and more. If you’re talking something less spiritual, I would like to have a family. A husband and children. And I may have found that in Dominic. I’ve had a crush on him since I was a teenager. Then he disappeared and I didn’t think I’d ever see him again. But he’s home and in my space. I kind of like it.

6.  What is the most important thing to you? Loyalty.

7.  Do you read? If so, what is your favorite type of book to read? I love to read. Unfortunately,  I just haven’t had a whole lot of time for it. I read medical journals and a lot of emails. And now that I have someone trying to kill me, I’m living out one of the fiction novels I so love to read.

8.  If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? I wouldn’t be so anal about stuff. Then again if I weren’t, I probably wouldn’t be as good at my job as I am. At least that’s what my boss tells me. J

9.  Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet? I do! I have a wonderful lab named Yoda and stray cat I took in name Chewie. Chewie, you know, from Star Wars? Yep, it’s a little embarrassing, but I’m a Star Wars junkie. I also have a fish.

10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why? I’d love to go back to see the expressions on the face of the ancient Egyptians who did the first autopsy in 3000 BC. Autopsy is Greek for “to see for oneself”. I’m sure they were amazed by what they found. And that would be enough time travel for me. I like my creature comforts, thanks.

Margaret, thanks so much for having me! And to all you readers, I appreciate you stopping by! Happy reading. Lynette

  1. I don’t think I have ever read a book with a Medical Examiner in it before. Not a profession I would ever want to do.

  4. Bad news…that is one of the cons that is affecting my decision to take doctor of my future career choice list.

There are so many parts of such jobs that I don’t think I can handle.

I give props to those who can! God gave them that talent and patience and sooooo many other qualities!

  7. Sounds like an interesting story! It’s amazing what medical examiners are able to figure out by examining a person’s body.
