Heroine Interview from Beside Two Rivers by Rita Gerlach:

1. Darcy Morgan, tell me the most interesting thing about you.

The most interesting thing about me is my adventurous spirit, of which I am told I inherited from my mother. My Uncle Will says is an admirable trait in a female. But my Aunt Mari disapproves, and fears for me all the time. At a moment when my heart had been broken, I received an invitation from my grandmamma and journeyed to England. For years whenever I would tell someone my mother was Eliza Morgan and my father Captain Hayward Morgan, eyebrows were raised. I wondered why, and so when the opportunity came to me to discover the truth, I took it. It was also an opportunity that perchance I would see Ethan again and our love would be rekindled.

2.  What do you do for fun?

I love swimming in the Potomac, even though I almost drowned once. Not many young girls were allowed to venture out into the wilderness and explore the woods and river. In the late 1700s there were too many dangers. My favorite spot was a cliff overlooking the Potomac where I’d watch sunrises and sunsets.

3.  What do you put off doing because you dread it?

I put off telling my aunt where I am going and what I’ve been doing. She has a nervous constitution, and as I mentioned before, she fears for me all the time. The day I almost drowned, and Ethan came to my rescue, I pleaded with him not to tell her. I was able to conceal the event, but not from Uncle Will. Still, he agreed I not tell her, for she would have taken to her bed with a splitting headache and nerves.

4.  What are you afraid of most in life?

Dying young.

5.  What do you want out of life?

What I want most is to be happily marry and rebuild my childhood home at River Run.

6.  What is the most important thing to you?

How can there be one single thing of importance in life? I have many—perhaps too many to mention. I will say knowing my parents’ story has been of extreme importance to me. I want to know who they were, how my mother left this world, why my father left me with Uncle Will and Aunt Mari, and why people whisper behind my back when they are mentioned.

7.  Do you read? If so, what is your favorite type of book to read?

Yes, I read voraciously. Books are precious and quite costly. The ones in my uncle’s library are shared between me and my five female cousins. I enjoy adventurous stories, such as Robinson Crusoe, Gulliver’s Travels, and then the romances of Miss Fanny Burney.

The Holy Bible is my source of strength and I read it daily.

8.  If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I think I have a bit of cowardice in me, although I have been told this is far from true. I wish I were more open to speak my mind and have the wisdom of knowing how. I should have stood up to my father’s cousin with more boldness when he mistreated me.

9.  Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?

My uncle has a dog and we all love him and think of him as our own.

10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?

If only for an hour I could sit on the hillside and listen to Jesus preach the Sermon on the Mount that is where I would travel back to. To hear him teach the Beatitudes to a multitude would be an amazing moment and one I would treasure all my life. Other than that, I am content with the here and now.
