Interview with the heroine from With Every Letter by Sarah Sundin:

1. Mellie, tell me the most interesting thing about you.

What makes me unusual in 1942 America is how I straddle two cultures. I’m one-quarter Filipino, and as a child I accompanied my botanist father on his excursions in the Philippines. I’ve always been too American in the Philippines and too foreign in America.

2. What do you do for fun?

I like to read, draw, and go for walks. And I love to sing. Music allows me to express myself, and it comforts my patients.

3. What do you put off doing because you dread it?

Talking to people. As a nurse, I feel comfortable with my patients, but social situations make me nervous. After being rejected so many times, I prefer to keep to myself.

4. What are you afraid of most in life?

While I’m used to being rejected based on superficial things, I’d be broken if someone who knew the deepest parts of my soul rejected me.

5. What do you want out of life?

Flight nursing fulfills so many of my dreams—to show mercy to the sick and wounded, to travel to new and exciting locations, and to be able to support myself. But deep inside I long for a true friend to share with.

6. What is the most important thing to you?

Showing mercy. Papa always said mercy was the special gift the Lord gave me that I give back to others. Nothing makes me feel better than to comfort the hurting.

7. Do you read? If so, what is your favorite type of book to read?

I do. I love the classics and anything about other lands and cultures. Reading allows me to travel in my mind.

8. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

My mouth. It’s so wide and full, and I’ve always been teased about it. My father says I have an exotic beauty, but he’s biased. However, that can’t be changed. One thing I’d like to change about myself—and that I’m working on—is to learn how to make friends.

9. Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?

I’ve never had a pet since my father and I never stayed long in one place. I’ve always loved birds in the wild, but it would break my heart to put one in a cage. Someday I’d love to have a dog. They’re so friendly and loyal and accepting.

10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?

Oh my, what a fun question! Traveling is my favorite activity. I’ve explored the Philippines and Southeast Asia with my father, and I’m hoping I can see other new countries as a flight nurse. But to travel back in time? Fascinating. Perhaps I could join the Lewis and Clark expedition, or sail with Columbus, or settle with the Pilgrims, or travel in a wagon train along the Oregon Trail. How exciting it must have been to set out for completely unknown lands. And I’m sure a good nurse would have been useful on any of these journeys.
