Interview with the heroine from The Temporary Betrothal by Lily George:

1. Sophie Handley, tell me the most interesting thing about you.

Well, I do love to sew. I don’t know if that’s terribly interesting to my public, but it’s true. Sewing is how I find my creative release and my reason for being. And if I didn’t sew, I don’t know what I would do with myself.

2.  What do you do for fun?

I do love experimenting with new hair styles. And I love making over old gowns to try something fresh and alluring. My sister Hattie calls this frivolous, but then she caught her husband’s fancy in one of my creations, so why criticize my handiwork?

3.  What do you put off doing because you dread it?

I dislike anything stuffy or boring. Hattie loves to read, but I confess I find it dreadfully dull.

4.  What are you afraid of most in life?

Of losing my beloved, Charlie, once more. I lost him once, and life became a dreary desert without him.

5.  What do you want out of life?

I want to continue living a life of purpose with Charlie. He’s the person who taught me the most about looking beyond myself, and of helping others in need. Without his influence, I am afraid I would be quite selfish and scatterbrained.

6.  What is the most important thing to you?

To work God’s will among the veterans and their widows in Bath. Our missionary service helps those who have given their lives to Mother England.

7.  Do you read? If so, what is your favorite type of book to read?

Oh, dear. I knew you would ask this. I suppose I like reading fashion plates, if they count as literature.

8.  If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I wish I weren’t so inclined to frivolity. Charlie has helped me to see my purpose in life and to serve the Lord with a full heart, but I do confess that I am still rather flighty at heart.

9.  Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?

We don’t have a pet–only several barn cats and horses.

10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?

Why travel back in time? I love this era. So much change and progress. And the fashions–high-waisted gowns, Grecian hair styles–are so elegant. Why would I want to be anywhere else?
