I will not enter you without an email address (my way to contact you if you win). If you don’t want to leave an email address, another way you can enter is to email me at margaretdaley@gmail.com. The drawings end Sunday (September 16th) evening.

Interview with the hero from “Maybe Us” by Cynthia Ruchti in Cedar Creek Seasons:

 1. Tell me the most interesting thing about you.

Hi, I’m Beth Schurmer. The only rebellious thing about me is my toasted marshmallow hair. Or is it?

2. What do you do for fun?

Honestly, until that crazy brownie expert Derek opened his shop two doors down from my deceased grandmother’s Yarn Shop in Cedarburg’s historic district, I’d determined fun was going to have to wait until life settled down. My grandfather—Oompa—has been trying for years to get me to lighten up. But how can I? I have responsibilities. They don’t include romance. At all. Not now. And fun? Who has time? Quit it, Derek. You’re making me laugh again!

3. What do you put off doing because you dread it?

I’m having a hard time admitting that one of these days my Oompa will breathe his last. He seems far more content about it than I am. Who will love me like he does? Who will care like he does? And what will I do with my life when he’s…gone?

4. What are you afraid of most in life?

See Question Three. Or…is that really true? Now that I think about it, maybe I’m more afraid of asking for what my heart desires. I’ll have to ponder that for a while.

5. What do you want out of life?

I didn’t admit it, even to myself, until close to the end of the story Cynthia Ruchti wormed out of me! What a sweet moment that was! Sweet. That reminds me of Derek’s Cedarburg Covered Bridge brownie. Yum!

6. What is the most important thing to you?

My grandparents took me in when my parents died. I lived my teen years in their care. I don’t know where I’d be without their help. So taking care of my grandfather now when he needs me doesn’t just consume my time, it consumes my heart.

7. Do you read books? If so, what is your favorite type of book?

Don’t tell anyone, but I am passionate about classic children’s books. I don’t think thirty-ish is too old for a good children’s book, do you?

8. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I thought I wanted my first name changed. But Derek helped me see that the deeper meaning of my full first name bears a significance that I now want to hang onto and celebrate!

9. Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?

I don’t have a pet. Derek does. And that’s a whole other story!

1o. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?

If I could travel back in time, I’d be surrounded by my parents AND my grandparents. Oh, and…um…Derek. Sigh.
