Interview with the heroine from Dawn Comes Early by Margaret Brownley:

Kate Tenney, tell me the most interesting thing about you.

I’m a dime novelist or at least I was until my latest book was banned in Boston.  Boston’s Watch and Ward Society deemed my love story a detriment to society and accused me of putting wanton ideas into the heads of young readers.  Horsefeathers!   I didn’t put anything into their little heads that wasn’t already there.

What do you do for fun?

Fun?  You’re joshing right?  During the last couple of days I’ve been thrown from a horse, tossed into a cactus patch and chased by a wild hog.  My body has more pricks than a pin cushion and even my eyelashes hurt.  I can’t remember what it means to have fun.

What do you put off doing because you dread it?

I dread getting up in the morning.  Why do ranch hands think they have to race the sun?  What would happen if we got up at say…five a.m.  Would the cattle really mind that much?

What are you afraid of most in life?

Men.  Every man I’ve ever known deserted me, starting with my father and grandfather.

What do you want out of life?

Permanence.  Land is the only thing that will always be there for me.  It will never let me down.  Of course nothing about the west is like I wrote about in my books—including the men.

What is the most important thing to you?

Right now it’s to prove to the doubting ranch owner that I have what it takes to run a cattle ranch.  If only I could learn to stay on a horse…

Do you read? If so, what is your favorite type of book to read?

I know that everlasting love is pure fiction, but I still can’t resist a good romance on occasion.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I wish I had the same relationship with God as Ruckus has. The ranch hand walks, talks and breathes his Christian beliefs. What must it feel like to have that kind of faith?

Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?

I don’t have a pet but I was given a horse to ride named Decker.  He was named that because he’s the bottom of the deck as far as horses go.  The wranglers swear that he’s slower than molasses, but don’t believe it.  Race horses should be that slow.

If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?

I’d go back to the apartment house I burned down when I was eight years old.  I was trying to save my mother from that awful man.  After our home went up in flames my mother and I were forced to live on the streets, and things went from bad to worse.  If I could go back maybe I could think of another way to save my mother.  Then again, maybe nothing could.
