Interview with one of the heroes from Oregon Outback by Elizabeth Goddard:

1.  Carver Love, tell me the most interesting thing about you.

I’m the eldest in the family and take care of the house and ranch where I grew up along with my three brothers, though they’re long gone and have lives of their own.

2.  What do you do for fun?

Running the cattle ranch consumes all my time. I can’t remember the last time I took any time for myself just to have fun, even with cow hands around to help. That might sound boring to some, but I wouldn’t be a rancher if I didn’t enjoy sitting in a saddle. Yes, out here in the high desert of Oregon, we still do a lot of our work in the saddle.

3.  What do you put off doing because you dread it?

Calling Sheriff Sheridan Hall when I have a problem. Every time I see her we get into an argument. The truth is I don’t like seeing her as sheriff and she knows that.

4.  What are you afraid of most in life?

I’ve never been afraid of anything until the last year or so. Now I realize I’m might end up alone in my later years—a crotchety old cowboy—at least that’s how Sheridan thinks of me.

5.  What do you want out of life?

Growing up in this house, there were four of us boys, and we were a rowdy bunch. My parents loved each other—those were good times. I’d love to see that again. Leave a legacy.

6.  What is the most important thing to you?

To remain a pillar of integrity and strength in the community.

7.  Do you read books? If so, what is your favorite type of book? I’ve read all of Louis L’Amour’s books once if not twice.

8.  If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

My stubborn pride—I think it’s the roadblock preventing me from a friendship with the sheriff.

9.  Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet? I keep a trail dog and a shepherd around the ranch, but the cowhands are the ones fond of them and likewise. And I stable horses for the county’s mounted patrol unit—if I wasn’t a cattle rancher, I’d still have the horses. Can’t say enough about how I admire them. But the animal I love and respect, and consider a companion in life is Kodiak—my horse.

10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?

I’d go back ten years ago when I had the sheriff’s attention as a possible suitor. I know that sounds old fashion, but I’m an old-fashioned kind of guy. She wasn’t the sheriff when we spent time together. I’d do everything differently and maybe. . . maybe now she’d be my wife instead of the sheriff.
