Interview with the heroine from Rainbow’s End by Valerie Comer and 3 other authors:
1. Lyssa Quinn, tell me the most interesting thing about you.
I don’t think I’m all that interesting, really, but I just finished teaching third grade this school year for another teacher’s maternity leave. I love those kids! I’m still carrying my folders with some of the #1 Teacher and other stickers they gave me. One little girl said she hoped I’d teach fourth grade next year. That made my heart melt.
2. What do you do for fun?
Hike. I love geocaching, but most of the fun is getting there. The caches tucked under picnic tables in parking lots aren’t worth the effort–not when I can hike miles into Lake of the Ozarks State Park and find the challenging ones. I feel closer to God when I’m immersed in nature.
3. What do you put off doing because you dread it?
Right now, before my story starts, I’ve been challenged by my roommate, Jeannie, and our church’s new youth pastor to find sponsors for the Rainbow’s End Treasure Hunt outreach event. I have everything laid out, designed, and organized, but I’m totally dreading contacting local businesses and asking them to sponsor the hunt. I can find any excuse why another day would be a better time to start than right now.
4. What are you afraid of most in life?
Ridicule. I’ve always been hesitant to make a stand for Christ because I hate being in the limelight with people laughing at me. It happened to my dad, who had no tact at all and preached at everybody, whether they invited it or not. It happened to my best friend in college with this one particular professor, who loved to pick on her in class. I’d rather crawl under a rock.
5. What do you want out of life?
I want to make a difference for kids. That’s why I became a teacher. I suppose you could say what I want is a permanent position instead of all the substituting I’ve been doing. Doing a maternity leave has been great, but a little security would be awesome.
6. What is the most important thing to you?
I’d like to say my faith in Jesus, but evidence might not back that up. I have no trouble telling people a bunch of reasons they shouldn’t drink soda or eat junk food. I don’t even care what they say back to me about it. Why can’t I apply that thick skin to sharing the gospel?
7. Do you read? If so, what is your favorite type of book to read?
I do–not a lot of fiction, though. I read mostly nonfiction about environmental issues.
8. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
I’ve read Matthew 10:33, which talks about God denying He knows us if we deny Him. Still, every time there’s a chance to speak up for Him, my brain and tongue freeze over and the opportunity slides by. I need boldness to share my faith no matter what.
9. Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet? No, I don’t. My college friend Jeannie and I are just renting this apartment. I’m not sure I want a pet. A dog would be a great hiking companion, but I wouldn’t want to leash him all the time.
10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?
I’d go back to college, sit beside Jeannie at the back of Humanities class, and proudly tell Professor Kennedy I’m a Christian. But first I’d need that dose of boldness we talked about a couple of questions ago.
