1. Raine, tell me the most interesting thing about you.

I’m vanilla. Boring. Homeschooled, Christian college, never went anywhere further from home than twenty miles to Blue Springs for a picnic. I’ve spent my life with my nose pressed to the screen watching others live. This summer I’m jumping in and grabbing life. And the minute I’ve got my plane fare saved, I’m headed to Africa to teach orphans. No more vanilla.

2. What do you do for fun?

I commuted to college for the past four years, scooped ice cream at Frozen Gold out on State Route 44 every spare minute to pay tuition. Hmm. I’m thinking. Kids and teaching are fun. Long walks on the beach, ditto. Laughing—I’d like to laugh more this summer.

3. What do you put off doing because you dread it?

Thinking about, Eddie, my brother, who abuses… meth. I hate to even admit out loud that I know what Eddie uses. Sometimes the hair on my arms stands up and a tremor passes through my body. I know something evil is going on with Eddie.

4. What are you afraid of most in life?

That Eddie will OD, get caught in a drug deal, be arrested, die. I’m afraid… he’ll hurt me.

5. What do you want out of life?

I want what anybody wants—to love and be loved. Maybe that will just be African kids who have no parents. But in the pit of my stomach I want the kind of love that happens between a man and a woman who believe the same things and work as a team.

6. What is the most important thing to you?

Loving God. Doing what He wants me to do. Wait, that’s true, but part of me wants to put oceans and continents between me and Eddie.

7. Do you read? If so, what is your favorite type of book to read?

I like non-fiction. Unfortunately, I know just about everything there is to know about meth addiction without ever having used it. I like books that help me focus on God, think about Him and how He relates to us and how we relate to Him.

8. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I would have friends. I don’t need a lot of friends, but I’d have deep relationships in which I could be completely open and honest. I’m going to make those friends this summer. I’ll start with Aly. Even though we just met, she acts like she’s ticked off at me. But it doesn’t matter. She’s my roommate. I’m going to make it work. Drew annoys me with his teasing, but I’m just going to have to suck it up and make friends with the people God stuck in my life. Cal? Cal is trouble. I can feel that quiver of attraction under my ribs—where it’s going to stay. No guy is going to anchor me to US soil.

9. Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?

I have a psychotic Great Dane I got for my sixteenth birthday named Antoine who hides behind the couch every time the garbage truck rumbles by. He’s even afraid of cats. Can we say doggie issues?

10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?

Maybe I’d go back and meet John Wycliffe to thank him for fighting for the translation of the Bible. But, I’d rather go into the future—to Africa—so I can start my life and make it count.
