Interview with the heroine from A Wedding Transpires on Mackinac Island by Cara Putman:

1.Alanna, tell me the most interesting thing about you.

I’m one of a rare breed who grew up on Mackinac Island. I actually traveled to school in the winter by snow mobile. I don’t think there are too many people out there who can say that!

2.  What do you do for fun?

When I’m not knee-deep in a legal matter, I’m usually helping my mom with social media. There are so many more ways she could let the world know about the art studio my parents own. The Painted Stone is established on Mackinac Island, but with a little help could reach a much larger audience. If only the social media outlets would stay static for awhile. Just when I think I understand them, it changes again.

3.  What do you put off doing because you dread it?

For eleven years I put off returning to the island, but now that fear is behind me. Today, it’s more mundane things like landscaping around the pond my parents share with the love of my life. He’s a wonderful man, but he’s done even less than my parents to add a little visual interest around the edges of the pond. Too bad he thinks messing with it will ruin a bird habitat.

4.  What are you afraid of most in life?

After the events I experienced in A Wedding Transpires on Mackinac Island, there’s not much left to fear. I thought the past would always haunt me. Now it doesn’t. I thought discovering my family in a lie would destroy our bond, but instead we are closer than ever. And I thought returning home would mean that my dreams of love would be forever dashed. Now I know that’s not true…I only delayed letting them bloom to life.

5.  What do you want out of life?

I love the law, but I want more than long work days followed by short nights at home. I’m still discovering exactly what that will look like, but with Jonathan in my future, I imagine a life that’s more fulfilling.

6.  What is the most important thing to you?

The most important? Living a life that honors God in all I do. It’s not easy, but what I long for.

7.  Do you read? If so, what is your favorite type of book to read?

I love to read! It’s perfect for those long winter nights. A book I just read and loved was Randy Singer’s The Last Plea Bargain. He is the rare legal thriller writer who gets all the details right. It doesn’t mean I don’t occasionally want to argue with the strategies his characters adopt, but I love the books!

8.  If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I’d be more forgiving of others. If I could have let go of the past, I wouldn’t have sequestered myself from Mackinac Island for eleven years. Turns out I was the only one holding on to the pain of the past so tightly. When I could let go and forgive, I found a freedom I thought was denied me.

9.  Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?

I have a cat who wishes I’d settle down and quit traveling back and forth between Grand Rapids and Mackinac Island. I’d love a dog, but they are too needy for the lifestyle I have.

10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?

Definitely World War II. I love the way our country pulled together to fight for a cause.
