Interview with the hero from Because of Me by Fay Lamb:
1. Michael Hayes, tell me the most interesting thing about you.
There’s a young boy. His name is Cole Michael Putnam. He’s not my son, but he’s definitely here on this earth because of me.
2. What do you do for fun?
I love to sit under a cloudless moon and look up at the stars. When Issie and I were younger, we’d sit out in her front yard, and I’d point out the constellations for her. I want to sit with Issie soon and do that again.
3. What do you put off doing because you dread it?
For four years, my best friend, Kip, and I have had something between us. We need to talk about our pasts, but after what Kip allowed to happen to Isabel, despite my forgiveness of him, it’s very hard to broach the subject.
4. What are you afraid of most in life?
Doing something that will bring harm to others. I’ve done it before, and I never want to do it again. Issie Putnam paid dearly for my past mistakes.
5. What do you want out of life?
That’s an easy one. I want to gain back the life I lost due to my own ambition and greed.
6. What is the most important thing to you?
The blonde haired, blue-eyed woman I was forced to leave behind.
7. Do you read books? If so, what is your favorite type of book?
I’m a journalist. I read all the time. Mostly non-fiction and nine times out of ten, I’m reading for research for my latest article.
8. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
Kind of funny for a successful journalist, but I have a fear of rejection. My father walked out on me when I was a kid. His abandonment tainted me. Rejection is something I don’t get over easily. It has sometimes stopped me from taking strides toward what I want to achieve.
9. Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?
No pets now, but if I get my way, there are two cows in my future. One likes me and the other, I’m pretty sure, she despises me. Cole Putnam says I have it all wrong, but that silly bovine gives off a vibe.
10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?
I’d travel back to the night when I led my fiancée into a trap that changed our lives forever. She was torn from me. I was sent to prison, and our carefully planned life came unraveled. If I could go back then, I’d do it all differently. No. I wouldn’t. If I’d have done it differently, Issie and I may have married. We may have had a child, but . . . it wouldn’t be Cole.
Come to think of it, despite the pain and the tragedy, in the end, I can look back and say, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”
