Interview with the heroine from Christmas Stars for Dry Creek in Mail Order Christmas Brides by Janet Tronstad:
Eleanor McBride, tell me the most interesting thing about you.
It’s 1884 and almost Christmas. I’ve had a hard life since my father died and so there isn’t much time for anything but work. That’s why I agreed to go west and marry Sergeant Adam Martin. Of course, it wasn’t so much the sergeant as it was his seven-year-old daughter, Hannah. Oh, to be a mother! I could not believe I would have the chance at last to be a mother.
What do you do for fun?
I suppose looking at the stars through my father’s old telescope would be what you’d want to know here. I always feel close to my father when I do that. And, my Heavenly Father, too. Have you seen the stars on a clear night in Montana? There’s nothing like it. The old cabin the sergeant has for us isn’t much, but the sky is magnificent here.
What do you put off doing because you dread it?
I’ve never been much for fancy sewing and I know most women are supposed to be good at that. I can shear a lamb and cord my own yarn though so I think I should get some credit for that.
What are you afraid of most in life?
Being alone. I never felt alone until my father died and then I felt it keenly.
What do you want out of life?
I wanted a family. That’s why Hannah was so important to me.
What is the most important thing to you?
Standing up for myself. That’s why, when the sergeant’s mother started in criticizing me, I had a hard time holding my tongue.
Do you read? If so, what is your favorite type of book to read?
I love to read my father’s old Bible.
If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
I suppose it wouldn’t hurt to have a sweeter temperament.
Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?
I have a crippled kitten I rescued when I arrived here in Montana at the railroad station.
If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?
I would dearly love to meet Jesus, but then I guess I will one day.
