I will not enter you without an email address (my way to contact you if you win). If you don’t want to leave an email address, another way you can enter is to email me at margaretdaley@gmail.com. The drawings end Sunday (October 2nd) evening.

Interview with the heroine on Nightwatch by Valerie Hansen:

1. Jill Kirkpatrick, what do you do for fun?

Fun? It’s really hard to say, especially lately. My best days are the ones I spend taking care of children as their foster mother. Those three Pearson children, Tim, Paul and Megan are a joy to be around in spite of the terrible trauma they recently faced.

2.  What do you put off doing because you dread it?

I’m not crazy about serious personal introspection. I like to think I live my life one day at a time, although lately my days are anything but dull.

3.  What are you afraid of most in life?

Me? Afraid? Well, okay. There is the little problem of whoever murdered these poor children’s parents and now seems to be after them. Thank goodness I have my firefighter friend, Mitch Andrews, on my side.

4.  What do you want out of life?

There was a time when I just wanted to settle down and raise a family but now that I’m a widow I don’t know. I guess I should be content with helping helpless kids but I keep thinking that God has more in store for me. Maybe I should become a CASA volunteer like the woman who is the “Court Appointed Special Advocate” for the Pearson children.

5.  What is the most important thing to you?

Finally an easy question. I want to make a difference in the world, even if it’s only in the lives of a few needy kids. Taking them in and loving them is not nearly as hard as finally letting them go on to permanent homes but I manage because I truly care.

6.  Do you read? If so, what is your favorite type of book to read?

Well, I used to love suspense and mystery. Since my own life started to resemble one of those scary plots, I’m not so sure!

7.  If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I suppose I’d be braver. Oh, and wiser, too.

8.  Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?

Mugsy is my funny little house dog and provides good therapy for frightened kids – and for me. Outside I have Salt and Pepper, two herding dogs who keep a lookout over this old farm and amuse the older children – and me, of course. I don’t know what I’d do without all of them.

9. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?

I used to think I’d want to go back and stop my late husband from being so careless with his own life but if I’m trusting God in all things, I suppose I shouldn’t argue. I think the best, smartest choice is to keep looking forward and putting all my trust in the Lord, and in Mitch, of course. The path that brought me to this moment was a rough one, yet it also brought the greatest happiness in the end.
