Heroine Interview from Dead Reckoning by Rachelle McCalla:

Ginny McCutcheon, tell me the most interesting thing about you.

I’m an acrobatic pilot, flying for the Dare Divas Stunt Flying Troupe.  Normally my job involves risks, but lately it’s gotten quite dangerous.  It’s seems someone’s trying to kill me.

What do you do for fun?

I’m very fortunate that my job is fun.  I love flying.  But with the danger closing in, I feel like I have to choose between giving up flying, or losing my life.

What do you put off doing because you dread it?

My brother is getting married in two weeks.  I’m going to be in the wedding, and I promised him I’ll be there, but he wants me to come home sooner.  The thing is, I don’t want to go home.  My dad died a few months ago, and it’s just too painful to be home right now.

What are you afraid of most in life?

That’s a tricky question.  I supposed I should say I’m afraid to die, but on another level, I’m just as afraid of letting whoever’s after me keep me out of the sky.

What do you want out of life?

Even though I’m quite happy flying for the Dare Divas, I think it would be great fun to have a stunt flying troupe all my own.  Then I wouldn’t be butting heads all the time over risqué costumes or immoral sponsors.  I could run the troupe on my own terms and honor my values.

What is the most important thing to you?

Family.  I was torn apart by my father’s death.

Do you read? If so, what is your favorite type of book to read?

I like to read anything to do with flying, especially real-life accounts of the early days of barnstorming, including some of the first female pilots.  Wow, those girls were brave!

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

Sometimes I wish I wasn’t a McCutcheon.  I know that probably sounds crazy, but over the course of my father’s nine-year battle with cancer, it felt like McCutcheons were weak and struggling.  Meanwhile, the McAlisters down the road sent their sons off to join the Air Force.  The McAlisters are the local heroes.  So is it any wonder then, that when I joined the Dare Divas and picked a flying moniker, I chose to be Ginger McAlister?

Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?

I love animals, but my life is in too much upheaval for a pet to depend on me.

If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?

I wish I could go back in time and prevent the accident that injured one of my fellow pilots when she was flying my plane.  Maybe, if we knew who tampered with the plane, we could catch the would-be killer before anyone gets hurt.
