Interview with the heroine from A Heart Revealed: Emma Malloy
1. Emma, tell me the most interesting thing about you.
Something interesting about me? Goodness, I’m afraid I’m rather boring next to my best friend, Charity O’Connor, who’s so colorful and full of life and love and fun. But I actually like it that way—safe and secure behind the scenes, you know? I suppose I’m just not all that comfortable in the limelight, at least not since I’ve had these scars on my face. But … I do have a fascinating job! I am the manager of Dennehy’s Department Store in downtown Boston, second to Filene’s in size, but first in customer satisfaction, I’ll have you know! So if I shine at all, that’s where it would be—dickering with salesmen over surcharges on a foreign shipment, battling a shipping agent over late delivery, or soothing a disgruntled customer. But the best? Working shoulder-to-shoulder with some of the dearest, albeit grumpiest, employees I’ve met. No, not employees—more like family!
2. What do you do for fun?
Well, I love to paint and knit and, oh yes—play dominoes with my landlord Mrs. Peep and my young neighbor, Casey Herringshaw. We have so much fun every Sunday evening, giggling and chatting like three teenage girls, even though Mrs. Peep is in her seventies and I’m in my thirties. And then, Charity and I love to go shopping together, mostly for her, of course, because as a widow of sorts—my estranged husband is still back in Dublin, you know—I really have no need to dress up, even though Charity insists that I do. I have to smile because she’s constantly playing with my makeup and my hair, which I have to admit, I do enjoy. I guess it makes me feel pretty and feminine again, like I used to so long ago. But I would have to say the thing I miss the most is dancing! I was quite the dancer in my day back in Ireland, you know, before I married Rory. So you can imagine the fun I had teaching Charity’s brother, Sean, how to dance. The poor man is a confirmed bachelor who’s been invited to a wedding, and I coaxed him into learning the Lindy Hop and the Foxtrot. My, but we had a grand time!
3. What do you put off doing because you dread it?
Talking about my past. Life with Rory was difficult, to say the least, and I’d much rather forget about that and focus on my life now, drawing closer to God, running the store, loving and enjoying my friends—especially the O’Connors, who have made me feel like one of their own.
4. What are you afraid of most in life?
People with tempers and my past.
5. What do you want out of life?
Deep faith, good friends, and a heart free of guilt.
6. What is the most important thing to you?
God, first and foremost, and then my friends.
7. Do you read? If so, what is your favorite type of book to read?
Sad to say, I don’t have a lot of time for pleasure reading, as I spend long hours at the store with my assistant manager, Sean O’Connor, and the rest of my time is devoted to friends, tutoring and mentoring neighbors, or spending time at the O’Connors sewing, chatting or just playing games like Pinochle and Whist. When I do read, it’s usually the Bible, which gives me great peace.
8. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
I would eradicate my scars, both those on the outside from when my husband threw hot grease in my face, and then those on my soul.
9. Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?
Oh, yes, a bored red tabby named Lancelot with orange stripes the color of marmalade on fresh cream and Guinevere—a fluffy white Persian who I rescued as a kitten from a cruel boy who abused her with a stick. She’s missing an eye, and somehow I’ve always felt a kinship with this helpless, little creature with whom I share a bond.
10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?
I would go back to Dublin, Ireland when I was a little girl, and I would work so much harder to love my parents and to obey them before it was too late. And, God help me, if given the chance, I would make different choices than I had, sparing me a lifetime of pain and guilt. But I wouldn’t change a thing about my life with Charity—working at Shaw’s Emporium together, or traveling to Boston to open a store and meeting her family. Especially her brother Sean, a man who showed me that, yes, true love is possible.

I love how with all she has been through Emma has a heart for God. Her past may still effect her but she still yearns for Him and works to overcome the past.
I have no doubt I will enjoy this book as I have all the others in the series.

If you can relate to Emma, then I would probably love to have you as a friend because she is an AMAZING friend to Charity O’Connor, but in all honesty, Charity is an AMAZING friend to her too, so they’re pretty even. I have to admit, Emma is a pretty fascinating character, which is what Sean discovers to the nth degree in this book. Of course, Charity has always known it because Emma is her best friend, and so has Mitch because Emma was around when Charity put him through the paces in book 2 of the DOB series, A Passion Redeemed. My husband says this is his favorite book of mine so far because he LOVES Emma. I hope everybody else does too! Good luck, my friend.

KATHRYN … thank you SO much! And, actually, Emma is a different kind of character for me. Physically scarred and married, so it was a new experience for me not having any romantic scenes between Sean and Emma until the end. Although I had intended to write Emma as a very scarred individual, my publisher wanted me to soften the scars, etc., which I did. But even so, she is a beautiful character on the inside, which makes her beautiful on the outside too … especially to Sean!

Excellent interview, Julie. Emma’s character really comes through. Her story with the abusive husband and the disfigurement is intriguing in itself, but to pair her up with Sean, and with Charity in the background makes this book a must-read.

Hey, CYNTHIA … you know, it’s funny, but when I went to write this interview with Emma, I sat and stared at the monitor forEVER, it seemed, desperate to find something fun and quirky to say about this shy and selfless character. But the truth is she is not “fun and quirky” like Charity, she is solid and sure and quietly strong … like an iron shelf that may not be very pretty to look at, but it will support you and hold you like no other. Those are the qualities that my husband feels will draw readers, so it will be interesting to see if he is right.
Now, me, on the other hand??? Give me the sass and antics of a Charity or Katie, and the fun literally flows from my fingers! 🙂

LDK!!! Hey, girl, how’s the weather in the Islands??? We had a July here that tipped the 100-degree mark for WEEKS and WEEKS!! I like sun more than the next guy, but when it’s so hot outside that my hubby makes me come in because he’s afraid my Mac will fry, I get a littttttle bit snarky, if you know what I mean!!
And THANK YOU about the cats’ names!! I strained my brain on that one and actually originally only had one cat, a grouchy male type (like Mitch), but somewhere along the line, I gave Emma a girl cat, too, which turned out to be a REAL blessing.
You see, my editor wanted me to make Emma a little bit more feminine and girly so Sean would have something to respond to, so I ended up putting in a scene with Emma in her bedroom, getting ready for bed and she’s teasing her girl cat who likes the smell of the cocoa butter Emma uses for her scars. Anyway, it came to me to make the girl cat a kitten that Emma rescued when a little boy poked the kitten’s eye out with a stick, leaving the kitten scarred and disfigured just like Emma, giving them a common bond. It just worked out to be a really nice touch in the scene, but then God does that for me ALL THE TIME!!!

I’ve been wondering if you named the cats Lancelot and Guinevere to purposely … mirror Emma’s “forbidden love” situation? I just thought of it now, LOL. =)

Can’t WAIT for Emma’s story! I always tell myself I’m going to hold off on reading the new Julie Lessman so I don’t have to wait a year for the next one, but lets face it, the minute I get my hands on it it’s read within the day :p Would love to get a chance to win a copy! 🙂

I would love to win this book!!! I have the first series and am working on a hope undaunted. These books are an inspiration. They are set in a time period that I love and just reading about that time period and what the character has to go through is an inspiration.
