Interview with the heroine from Sarah’s Gift by Marta Perry:
1. Sarah Mast, tell me the most interesting thing about you. I am an Amish midwife, dedicated to giving my clients the birthing experience they want. It seems like an ordinary life to me, but I know some people find it interesting, while others are appalled.
2. What do you do for fun? Like most Amish people, fun takes place in the family. I like getting together with the other women for a work frolic or a quilting, and I love family celebrations, like birthdays and anniversaries.
3. What do you put off doing because you dread it? I dread confronting people, but sometimes it’s necessary, as when new parents don’t see the need to have their babies tested for genetic diseases. And sometimes even the people we love the most have to be confronted, or we let happiness and fulfillment slip away.
4. What are you afraid of most in life? The worst thing that ever happened to me was not being able to get pregnant with my late husband. It seemed to sour all the love we had for each other. I will never put myself in the position of letting someone I love down that way, so I will never marry again.
5. What do you want out of life? I long for the fulfillment of using my gift from God to bring happiness to mothers and babies here in the Amish community of Pleasant Valley.
6. What is the most important thing to you? The most important thing to me is the safety of the mothers and babies I care for, and I would sacrifice anything to ensure that.
7. Do you read? If so, what is your favorite type of book to read? I like to read, and like a lot of Amish people, I especially enjoy the Little House on the Prairie books. I started reading them when I was a little girl, and I still go back and re-read them.
8. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? I would be a bit braver, if I could. I’ve always wanted to be like my midwife aunt, who always stood up for what she believed.
9. Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet? Not now, but growing up on the farm, I had a number of pets. I loved the dogs and the barn cats, and my special favorites were the Nubian goats my mother raised.
10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why? Sometimes, when I read the stories of the early Amish and how they were persecuted for their beliefs, I imagine myself living then, but I’m afraid I could not be as brave as they were.
