Interview with the heroine from Danger on Her Doorstep by Rachelle McCalla:
1.Maggie Arnold, tell me the most interesting thing about you.
I just inherited an old house my father was fixing up when he died. In fact, he died in the house. I’m going to have to finish his renovations before I can sell the place, but his murderer has never been caught…and I don’t think they want me around, either.
2. What do you do for fun?
I’m a pediatric nurse, and I love spending time with the children in my care. I can’t wait to finish this house project so I can use the funds from the sale to have a room in the new pediatric wing named after my father.
3. What do you put off doing because you dread it?
I need to make a decision about whether to sell the other house I inherited—the one I’ve been living in. I’ve got an offer on the table I know I shouldn’t refuse, but that leave me with nowhere else to go but the house my father died in. And I just don’t feel safe there.
4. What are you afraid of most in life?
I’m afraid my father’s killer will never be caught. That’s why I’m willing to stick around, because I could never forgive myself if the killer struck again.
5. What do you want out of life?
I want sick kids to get better. When I was younger, a toddler fell sick in one of my father’s rental houses, and everyone blamed him for her illness. I’ve made it my life’s mission to help children.
6. What is the most important thing to you?
Family. I loved my father and his death was difficult for me to bear. I’m so grateful to Gideon Bromley for helping me fix up the house. He knew my father well and sometimes he says things that remind me of my dad.
7. Do you read? If so, what is your favorite type of book to read?
Gideon gave me some wonderful books about Victorian Architecture. They’ve given me some great ideas for ways to fix up this place. If I’m not careful, I might start to like this house after all!
8. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
I wish I could make the ugly things about my past go away. I know folks in town blamed my father when people got sick in his rental house, and it still makes me uncomfortable being back in my home town. I wish everyone knew what a great guy my dad was—and that he wasn’t a bad landlord, no matter what anyone says.
9. Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?
I don’t have any pets, although I do love animals. With the long hours I work, I don’t feel it would be fair to the pet not to have more love and attention.
10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?
I would go back to the day that my father died, and catch his murderer before my father was killed. Gideon was the person who found my father’s body, and I know he thinks if he would have arrived sooner, he might have been able to save my dad. It hurts me to see Gideon blame himself. I wish I could have saved all of us from that painful experience.
