Interview with the hero of Digitalis by Ronie Kendig:

1. Cowboy, tell me the most interesting thing about you.

Interesting? Reckon my line of work is the most interesting thing about, ‘cept maybe my little girl, Mickey. She’s a stark contrast to do what do for a livin’, and I’d guess she’s also God’s way of proving to me that I’m not in control, though I fight for control every day.

2. What do you do for fun?

Sit out on the back dock with my pop, drink sweet tea, and watch my little darlin’ swing her pink fishin’ rod into the stocked pond. Nothing like that in the world.

3. What do you put off doing because you dread it?

*rubs back of neck* Reckon. . .reckon letting new people—girls, that is—into my life. I got some quirks, some repercussions because of my line of work, and well, not many people want to run with a messed up cowboy.

4. What are you afraid of most in life?

Those moments in time when reality blurs into the past, and I’m lost.

5. What do you want out of life?

To be whole, to not be afraid to move on in life.

6. What is the most important thing to you?

Reckon the answer to that is a tie—between being a father to Mickey, and being a part of Nightshade—those are some fine men, there. They got your back, no matter whether it’s in the field or at home, they’re there. And I return the favor.

7. Do you read books? If so, what is your favorite type of book?

Books? Yeah, well. . .unless it’s an instructional manual on a new sniper rifle or scope, or a plan book for our next op, and I do read my Bible—okay, yeah, I read some stories to Mickey at night, when I’m home—but that’s about as far as my literary prowess goes.

8. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I’d say that’s a trick question, don’t you think? I mean, if I change one thing, that has a trickle-down affect. Like when I’m linin’ up a shot—if the wind has even a slight shift, it’ll affect the trajectory and speed. If I change something about myself, then that’d affect other areas. Guess. . .I’d want to be healed of these flashbacks. I’m sure there’s a reason God hasn’t healed me yet, but I. . .well, He and I have a few tight talks about that recently, so yeah. . .guess that’d be what I’d change.

9. Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?

Not really a pet, but I down own some animals and livestock. My pride and joy is Firefox, my mare. She’s expectin’ soon. Beautiful animal, that girl.

10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?

Israel, eight years ago. Maybe things would be different today. . .maybe not. I’d like to think maybe I would’ve seen something I didn’t see before. . .it was too late.
