Heroine Interview from Yuletide Defender by Sandra Robbins:

1.Rachel Long, tell me the most interesting thing about you.

I word as a reporter for Lake City Daily Beacon. Although I like my job, I want to move up to a higher paying job as an investigative reporter for a television station or a larger newspaper. I even have dreams of making it to one of the major television networks.

2.What do you do for fun?

My idea of fun is spending my time off with my mother and my special needs sister. With my job and my family obligations, I don’t have time to go out for fun. Meeting my friend Mindy for coffee on Saturday morning has been the highlight of my week for a long time.

3.What do you put off doing because you dread it?

For the past few years I’ve quit going to church. My mother keeps after me about it, but I keep putting it off. I don’t understand why God gave my sister Cara so many disabilities, and I don’t understand why my father deserted us when Cara was born. I can’t reconcile those problems in my life with a loving God, and I keep putting off going back to church.

4.What are you afraid of most in life?

I’m scared of the responsibilities I know I’ll have when my mother dies. I will be responsible for all of Cara’s needs, and that’s going to take a lot of money that I don’t have. That’s why I’ve got to continue to climb the ladder of success. By the time Cara becomes my responsibility I need to have a high paying job.

5.What do you want out of life?

Most of my life I’ve put my wishes aside and concentrated on what my sister needs. It’s difficult for me to think about my own needs. Sometimes I get sad when I think how nice it would be to have a man to love me, but I haven’t found one who’s willing to commit to helping with Cara. I’ve met Matt Franklin, and he seems different. But I’m afraid to get my hopes up.

6.What is the most important thing to you?

Doing a good job for my newspaper and getting the story I’m after are the most important things to me right now. I have to concentrate on my goal.

7.Do you read? If so, what is your favorite type of book to read?

I like to read about reporters who’ve tackled big stories or uncovered secrets that affected society.

8.If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I would try to have more self-confidence about my relationships with other people. I want to think of myself as a person who’s special and one that people will like.

9.Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?

I don’t have a pet. When I was growing up, we couldn’t afford the expense of a pet. Now that I’m grown, I often think that I would like to have a dog, but I haven’t gotten one. It doesn’t seem fair to keep a pet confined all day while I’m at work. Also, sometimes a story I’m following may keep me away from home until late at night. Maybe someday I can have a dog. I hope so.

10.If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?

I would travel back to 1704 when the Boston News-Letter published its first issue. This was the first continuously publishing newspaper in America, and I would love to have been there the day the first issue was printed. It was a single sheet of paper printed on both sides, and it was published weekly. Publishing has really come a long way in 300 years.
