Interview with the hero from Code Triage by Candace Calvert:

1. Nick Stathos, tell me the most interesting thing about you.

I’m a San Francisco police officer and used to own a Greek restaurant— still love to cook. My wife, Leigh, used to tease that I’m “a cop with a whisk in my holster.”

2. What do you do for fun?

Drive my Z-4 too fast, and coach basketball for a great group of street kids.

3. What do you put off doing because you dread it?

Visiting my best friend’s little niece. When he died, I had brief affair with the child’s mother—I’ll regret it until the day I die.

4. What are you afraid of most in life?

That Leigh really is going to divorce me.

5. What do you want out of life?

A family around my dining table.

6. What is the most important thing to you?

My faith and saving my marriage—I only have a week to stop the divorce.

7. Do you read books? If so, what is your favorite type of book?

My Bible’s pretty worn out. And I have some Grisham novels . . . probably stuffed in a packing box right now.

8. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

My mistakes. But that’s where grace comes in, right?

9. Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?

Leigh has a blasted horse—it bites. So that’s what I ask her: “Why that pet?”

10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?
Easy question: I’d only go back about a year, to when things fell apart with Leigh. I’d do everything right this time. With God’s help, I’d be the husband she deserves.
