Interview with the heroine: Shannon O’Neil, from Second Chance Brides

1. Shannon, tell me the most interesting thing about you.

Sure now, I don’t know as there’s all that much interestin’ to tell, though some folks do seem enchanted with my Irish accent and the fact that I came to America from Ireland just a little over a year ago.

2. What do you do for fun?

Fun, eh? I’ve not been havin’ much fun of late. My parents died, leaving me an orphan in a foreign land, I found employment in a dreadful place and had to runaway, and then I was so desperate that I became a mail-order bride, but I won’t even mention how little fun that was. I do apologize for soundin’ jaded, but the past year has been rough. Sure now, I’ve rambled through a briar patch and not answered your question. I suppose the thing I most enjoy doing is making Irish lace.

3. What do you put off doing because you dread it?

I dread goin’ downstairs at the boardinghouse where I’m stayin’ when I know those rascally Corbett brothers are down there. Those two are full of blarney, they are, and after the shenanigans they pulled in bringin’ three different mail-order brides to town to marry the man I intended to marry, I find it hard to face them.

4. What are you afraid of most in life?

Of being alone. Of never having a home.

5. What do you want out of life?

I want to be able to trust God more. After all that’s happened, I find my faith a wee bit shakey, and yet, God is the only stable thing in my life. I want a home where I never have to move from and people who love me.

6. What is the most important thing to you?

Security and faith

7. Do you read? The only book I’ve read lately is the Bible.

If so, what is your favorite type of book to read? My family was poor, and we never had books in our home. ’Tis sad to say, but true.

8. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I’m wishin’ I had more boldness. Leah, another of the mail-order brides, is brave and speaks her mind. I don’t like to rock the boat, so I often remain quiet and end up having to do things I’d just as soon not do. I’m tryin’ to be bolder, but ’tis not my personality.

9. Do you have a pet? Nay, no pet.
If so, what is it and why that pet? If I could have one though, I’d like a wee puppy. Dogs love you unconditionally.

10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?

Knowin’ all I know now, I’d go back to Ireland and refuse to travel to America. My parents would still be alive, and though we didn’t have much, we had each other. But then again, if I did that, I’d never have met the most unexpected man who is slowly stealin’ my heart. God does work in peculiar ways, does He not? If I’d not come to America and then lost my parents, I’d have never come to Texas, and I’d never have met him. I’m afraid to get too hopeful, but perhaps God does have a purpose for my life and will work a miracle, giving me a man to love and a home of my own.
