Heroine Interview from Touching the Clouds by Bonnie Leon:

1, Kate tell me the most interesting thing about you.
Most people are curious about my being a pilot. A woman pilot is pretty unusual. My father taught me to fly. My first time up was with him in an open cockpit bi-plane. It was amazing.

2. What do you do for fun?
My favorite thing in life is flying, but it’s my job so I guess I can’t include it. Next to flying, I like fishing. When I lived in Washington, I spent a lot of time on the Yakima River fishing with my friend, Richard Benning. We knew all the best spots. Since I moved to Alaska, I’ve only gone a few times. I’m too busy these days.

3. What do you put off doing because you dread it?
I’m terrible at writing letters. It frustrates my mom to no end. I know she misses me so I feel bad. I’d rather make a telephone call, but it costs a pretty penny to make a call out of the territory.

4. What are you afraid of most in life?
I don’t like to talk about it . . . I had a crack up a few years ago. My best friend, Alison, was killed. It was my fault. Ever since, I’ve been afraid I’ll mess up again and kill someone else.

5. What do you want out of life?
To be honest I’m not sure. I want to keep working as a pilot, but I’d also like to get married some day and have a family. The trouble is I don’t know how to do both. And most men want a traditional wife who stays home, cleans and cooks and takes care of the kids. It’s possible I’ll never get married.

6. What is the most important thing to you?
I want to be a top notch pilot who can be trusted with any kind of run.

7. Do you read? If so, what is your favorite type of book to read?
I love to read. My favorite books are adventures, like Call of the Wild, and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. My mother once convinced me to read Jane Eyre. She’s wants me to be more cultured. I must admit I liked it. It was romantic.

8. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
I’d like to learn how to be more relaxed, like Mike. Nothing seems to bother him. I worry about everything. I’m a planner and if things don’t go the way I want, I end up frazzled. I’ve got to learn to relax.

9. Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?
Angel is my best friend. She’s a malamute/husky mix. My friend, Paul Anderson, gave her to me when she was just six weeks old. She loves to fly and goes everywhere with me. On long flights it’s good to have a friend along.

10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?
I’d go back to the day the Wright brothers made their first powered flights. They got up four times that day. The longest flight lasted only 59 seconds, but it must have been amazing. I’d love to have been there.
