Interview with the heroine from Nightshade by Ronie Kendig:

1. Sydney Jacobs, tell me the most interesting thing about you. Wow, I’ve never really thought about it. Let’ see—I guess. . .most interesting thing is being married to a Navy SEAL. He’s an incredible man, even with his idiosyncrasies and intensity.

2. What do you do for fun?

Fun? Is that allowed in life? Before. . .before things got complicated, I loved riding with Max—not on his sport bike, of course, on lazy days and just being with him. Nowadays, I like to sit and drink tea with my mom, or visit the antique shops downtown.

3. What do you put off doing because you dread it?

Confronting Max. Anything confrontational with him draws out his anger. There was a day I loved the burning intensity in his dark eyes. Now. . .now. . .well, things have changed. He’s changed.

4. What are you afraid of most in life?

Losing the only man I’ve ever loved—losing him in terms of our marriage, and losing him to this sea of volatility.

5. What do you want out of life?

I want my life back—my husband who could laugh, my marriage that brought me joy. I want it all back and I’ll do whatever it takes. But I know it’s up to God, and I try to leave it in His hands. It’s so hard when things just keep getting farther away from the way I want them though.

6. What is the most important thing to you?

I imagine with the way I’ve rambled on and on that it’d be obvious—my husband is the most important thing to me—next to my relationship with God, naturally.

7. Do you read? If so, what is your favorite type of book to read?

I love reading but I don’t have much time for it lately. However, when I do read, it’s usually a suspense or a supernatural (it’s a nice reminder to me that there are things unseen going on around us—I find hope in that) books like that one about the man whose home is a manifestation of his soul. The author—what’s his name?—Rubarb or something?

8. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

If I discovered anything I could change that would save my marriage, I’d change it. But I don’t know what it is. Perhaps I’m a bit too quick. . .I mean, when Blake—that’s my brother—nudged me to get the restraining order, well, maybe I went along too easily. I’d really like to be able to stand up for myself, for what I believe in, more than I do. I wish I could be stronger.

9. Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?

I wouldn’t mind something small and adorable but it’d take too much time and energy. I’m about to have my hands really full, so I’m okay being petless for now.

10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?

Is it cheating to say back to the day I filed for separation? My brother would kill me if he heard me say that, but I’d rather have my marriage back and whole then continue on with this. I just don’t know what else to do, and yes—even I can admit it’s not a healthy marriage. And Max is slipping farther and farther away. . .
