Interview with the hero of Calculated Revenge by Jill Elizabeth Nelson:

1.Noah Ryder, tell me the most interesting thing about you.

My careers—both of them—evolved over time. I grew into them, or they grew into me. However you want to look at it. The job of elementary school principal suits me to a T. Keeping a close watch over children is one of my passions. But I did revel in that first career . . . until I failed so badly. In my former line of work, getting personally involved with a client can cost an innocent life. I can’t pay that price again—not even for Laney Thompson. I must not let those big blue eyes get to me. The police and the FBI have got her situation covered. Riiiiight! Just like the last time . . .

2.What do you do for fun?

I’m a puzzle guy. Hence, perhaps, that first career. Every Christmas holiday I go looking for the most challenging picture puzzle I can find, and it occupies a card table in a corner of my living room until it’s finished. Then the pieces go back into the box, and I take it down to the Salvation Army. Now if Laney and little Briana were to give me a hand, maybe I’d finish the puzzle more quickly . . . Or not.

3.What do you put off doing because you dread it?

Laundry. Give me dirty dishes any day!

4.What are you afraid of most in life?

Losing loved ones . . . like I did the first time I hazarded my heart.

5.What do you want out of life?

Home, family, and a fulfilling career of benefit to my fellow man. I’ve got the career—a safe one this time. Someday maybe I can think about finding the rest of the package. It’ll have to be a God-thing, but not Laney Thompson, as much as I’m attracted to her. She’s a co-worker for one thing, and I learned the hard way about mixing work and romance. Besides, I cannot—dare not—deliver the service she wants most from me.

6.What is the most important thing to you?

Truth. And justice is a close second.

7.Do you read books? If so, what is your favorite type of book?

I sometimes read to relax in the evening. Aside from my daily devotions, I’m mostly interested in history and biographies. There is so much we can learn for today by examining the triumphs and tragedies of other lives.

8.If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I’d learn how to let go of the pain of the past. But how do you do that when you’ve loved so deeply and lost so completely. And it’s your own fault!

9.Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?

No pets in my house at the moment. If I added a wife and kids, that would most likely change. I’d vote for a dog, but for the right woman, I’d put up with anything from a turtle to a parakeet.

10.If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?

I’d return to the day I went shopping for an engagement ring and keep an eye out for the bad guy instead.
