Hero Interview from Liberty’s Promise by Amber Miller Stockton:

1. Gustaf, tell me the most interesting thing about you.

I do not know what another person might find interesting about me, but maybe it is that I come to this country with my family from Sweden for a better life, and I would give up everything to have a large piece of land of my own. No, wait a minute. My brother tell me he has something more interesting. Ah yes. It is that I can beat any man in sawing and chopping logs. I am the fastest in this colony.

2. What do you do for fun?

What is it you mean by “fun”? I love all work I do, and when I walk among the many rows of vegetables I have planted, it brings smile to my face. Maybe you mean what I do when I do not work? The Sabbath is a day I rest, and on that day, I like to go to the river and listen to the water falling over the rocks or watch for animals in the trees.

3. What do you put off doing because you dread it?

Speaking to Raelene to tell her how I feel in my heart. I fear she will not accept my love, for I am only a simple farmer.

4. What are you afraid of most in life?

I fear I will not be the man my Father in Heaven wants me to be because I have chosen my own desires over His. I also fear I will lose the woman I love and have to leave her.

5. What do you want out of life?

I want to be an honorable man, to make promises and keep them, to work hard and leave legacy for my children.

6. What is the most important thing to you?

Family and friendships and love. This is three things. Yes, I know. But I think they all go together.

7. Do you read books? If so, what is your favorite type of book?

Yes, almost every day. I love to read about adventures and people who go to places I will not go or do things I will never do.

8. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I want to be more honest and to not hide what I think or feel from other people.

9. Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?

What is a pet? Oh! My brother tell me it is an animal you love more than any other. Yes, I have a dog that stays by my side all day and all night. I find him when my family first come to this country. He was alone and hungry. I feed him, and now he is with me always.

10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?

Travel to a time different from this one? This is not possible, is it? What do you use? How do you get there? I do not know where I would go or what I would do. Maybe I go to when Jesus walked this land to talk to Him and listen to His teachings.

Thank you for these questions. I am happy to meet you. But I must go back to work. There is a lot to do on this farm. If it is not done in time, Miss Strattford could lose her land. I do not want that to happen. So, I work hard. I wish you good day.
