Interview with the hero: Zach Webster of Scattered Petals

1. Zach, tell me the most interesting thing about you.
Aw, ma’am, you’re asking the wrong person that question. I don’t reckon that I’m all that interesting. If you asked Clay’s father, he’d probably talk about our experiences in the war with the Mexicans. If you asked Clay himself, he might say something about the fact that I took over the ranch duties, leaving him free to do what he does best – doctoring. And if you asked Priscilla, well … I sure hope she doesn’t still remember that I look an awful lot like the bandit that hurt her.

2. What do you do for fun?
To tell you the truth, fun hasn’t been a big part of my life, ever since that night by the river back home. I guess you could say everything changed then. If hadn’t been for that night, I would never have wound up in Perote. Oh, you haven’t heard of Perote? It’s that big castle the Mexicans turned into a prison for us Texans. I used to think it was the worst place on Earth. But, if it hadn’t been for Perote, I wouldn’t be here in Ladreville, the prettiest town in the Texas Hill Country, and I wouldn’t have met Priscilla, so I guess God did what He promised and turned something bad into good.

3. What do you put off doing because you dread it?
Now, if I told you that, I wouldn’t have any secrets left. Sorry, but that’s between me and God.

4. What are you afraid of most in life?
Hurting Priscilla. That woman’s had more than her share of hurting. I’m not a healer, but if I were, I’d heal those wounds. Even Clay – he’s the town’s doctor and a mighty good one, too – doesn’t know how deep those wounds are.

5. What do you want out of life?
What do most men want out of life? A home of my own, a wife and a couple children. The problem is, I know I’ll never have those things.

6. What is the most important thing to you?
Honor. Without that, a man’s nothing.

7. Do you read books? If so, what is your favorite type of book?
I’m a rancher, ma’am, not a reader, unless you count reading horses’ and steers’ moods. I’m pretty good at that.

8. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
My past.

9. Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?
Charcoal –he’s my horse – wouldn’t like it very much if I called him a pet. After all, everyone knows a horse isn’t a pet. Why, he’s practically part of me. What would a cowboy like me be without a horse?

10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?
Now, why would anyone travel back in time? I’m mighty happy with life in 1856, or I would be if only I could make Priscilla smile. But a man can’t get everything he wants. Or can he?
