I will not enter you without an email address (my way to contact you if you win). If you don’t want to leave an email address, another way you can enter is to email me at margaretdaley@gmail.com. The drawings end Sunday (Dec. 6th) evening.

Heroine interview for Vickie McDonough’s story in Wild West Christmas:

1. Sarah Ames, tell me the most interesting thing about you.

I live on a ranch in the Texas Hill Country with my pa and three sisters. My folks didn’t have any sons, so my sisters and I help run the ranch.

2. What do you do for fun?

I love horses. I’ve become my pa’s number one horse trainer. It’s a skill that usually belongs to men, but I have a special knack for it.

3. What do you put off doing because you dread it?

Cooking, cleaning, sewing, anything related to housework. When I cook, I burn everything or it’s so awful you can’t eat it. I stabbed my fingers if I sew and get blood on the fabric. I hate being inside.

4. What are you afraid of most in life?

I suppose it would be disappointing my pa. He wants me to act more like a lady, like my sisters, but I never seem to be able. I prefer trousers to skirts and horses to houses. I’m the third sister of four and just don’t seem to fit in.

5. What do you want out of life?

To keep living life as I have been. Training horses, living with my pa and sisters.

6. What is the most important thing to you?

I want to win the blue roan stallion that will be awarded to the winner of the horse race at the Horsefly, Texas, celebration. Only one other woman has ridden in the race before, and she fell off her horse. I know I can win. I have to win. We need that stallion, because ours died last month, and Pa doesn’t have the money to replace it.

7. Do you read? If so, what is your favorite type of book to read?

Not much, but I do like to read magazines about horses and learn new training techniques.

8. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I’d be a man. They have so many more opportunities than women, and they are treated with respect. They can raise horses and ride in races and nobody gives them a second glance, but let a woman try that. Sorry, that’s a sore spot with me.

9. Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?

I’m not sure that you’d call her a pet, but Golden Lady is my horse. She’s the fastest mare in three counties, and I just know she can win that race. I raised and trained Lady myself, and she’s very special to me.

10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?

I don’t know about traveling back in time, but I’d sure like to go up north where I hear there are wild horses running free. I’d love to catch and train a whole passel of them.

Tomorrow I will be posting the hero interview from this story.
