Interview with the heroine from Guarded Secrets by Leann Harris:
1. Lilly, tell me the most interesting thing about you.
Well, I run our church’s community garden. It happened as a fluke. I went to the church, looking for a job after my husband deserted me when I told him I was pregnant. The pastor had just started working at the church, so I worked as a jack-of all trades. We were the only two people staffing the church. The garden was an afterthought, a way to minister to the neighbors.
2. What do you do for fun?
I ride my bicycle. My daughter, Penny, loves it when we go bike riding together.
3. What do you put off doing because you dread it?
The laundry. I hate it. I sure wish I had a maid. The nice thing about my new husband, Jon, is he started doing it after we discovered I was pregnant. I’m wondering if he’ll continue to do it. Of course, we don’t mention his help to the rest of the detectives in Albuquerque PD. No one would ever let him live it down.
4. What are you afraid of most in life?
Being deserted. My first husband, Pete, left when he discovered I was pregnant. Sometime, I wake up in the middle of the night and reach out for Jon to make sure he’s there. He always is.
5. What do you want out of life?
I want our church garden to grow and touch others. God helped me when I was lost and alone. It was through those terrible times that I am able to comfort others who are now facing traumas and problems. While we feed their bodies, we can also feed their souls.
6. What is the most important thing to you?
Faithfulness. If you say you will do something, do it. Jon has been a blessing that way. He is there when I need him. I thank the Lord everyday for blessing Penny’s and my lives with him.
7. Do you read? If so, what is your favorite type of book to read?
I read anything I can get my hands on. I love reading biographies of famous people. Martin Luther’s story was something else. I also read an occasional mystery.
8. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
I’d be 5’8” with blonde hair and blue eyes. No, I’m just teasing. My husband wouldn’t like that. If I could change one thing about myself is to have more patience. That flaw has me on my knee in serious prayer.
9. Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?
Penny has talked me into a dog. Snowball is a golden retriever. We got her from the local shelter. She’s amazing, letting the kids hang all over her. Snowball even allowed Penny to put a baby caps on her and bows. I often give Snowball an extra treat at night after a day of dress-up
10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?
I would like to travel back and be with Apostle Paul. To have gone with him on his journeys preaching the gospel would be amazing. And to have been the person who wrote down what Paul was saying in his letters. Of course, maybe I wouldn’t have wanted to be with him on his last journey to Rome. That shipwreck thing—I could do without that.
