Interview with the heroine from Charlsey’s Accountant by Lena Nelson Dooley:

1. Charlsey Ames, tell me the most interesting thing about you.

I don’t think it’s interesting at all, but the fact I wear men’s trousers when I work on the ranch really caused an uproar.

2. What do you do for fun?

I enjoying being in the outdoors working on the ranch, but I especially like it when we have a community get-together where I can talk to other women my own age.

3. What do you put off doing because you dread it?

I’m really not good at cooking, so I try to keep out of the kitchen as much as I can.

4. What are you afraid of most in life?

That my father will die and leave us as our mother did.

5. What do you want out of life?

I want to marry a rancher who will understand me and love me and have lots of children. Having sisters who were close to my age had been a plus in my life.

6. What is the most important thing to you?

My family. Always my family.

7. Do you read? If so, what is your favorite type of book to read?

At the Ames Ranch we have quite a collection of books, and I’ve read many of them. I like all kinds.

8. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

All my sisters have dark hair and a darker complexion than I do. I almost look as though I don’t fit. Maybe if I looked more like them.

9. Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?

The ranch has lots of animals, but they all have a purpose. I suppose my mare Dancer is the closest thing I have to a pet. I can talk to her about anything, and she just stands there and listens without disagreeing with me.

10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?

I love living in this modern time of 1890. Wondrous thing happen every day. The train can take us wherever we need to go in a fraction of the time it used to take to travel. I don’t think I want to go back.
