Interview with the heroine:
1. Sally Stevens, tell me the most interesting thing about you.
Well, y’all just wouldn’t believe it, but I save drowning worms after a rainstorm. Those poor thinks are just so swollen and bloated-looking, I have to get them to higher ground. Kinda like God does for us.
Of course, I’m also kinda an expert on chocolate, but then most of y’all middle-aged women are as well, so I won’t go into how I’ve calibrated the percentage of dark in all the popular brand candy bars, how I know the number of peanuts per bite in a Snickers, how—I could just go on and on about candy.
2. What do you do for fun?
Play music I can jiggle and wiggle and giggle to and cook with my best friend Maureen. Think big 9X13s of lasagna, homemade clover yeast rolls, and Mama’s secret chocolate pie recipe. And Maureen doesn’t mind a bit when I lick the spoon and the pans!
3. What do you put off doing because you dread it?
Telling the truth about the little fixes I get in. Wouldn’t you know it, I left my briefcase at a recent teaching gig in Lafayette, and on the way back, there were at least six slowdowns for road construction, and I really needed to get home to cook dinner.
In this little old town called Colfax, Indiana, this no-nonsense cop had the nerve to pull me over, said I was doing 43 in a 30. I’m just SURE something was wrong with his speed gun or whatever that thing is. And somehow I have to tell my husband Sam, and I spent this month’s budget money on a new negligee, and…oh, well, I’m sure y’all understand.
4. What are you afraid of most in life?
The way all those secrets from my past are oozing out—just like the mud in that awful bayou—to ruin everything, y’all. Just everything. Even…my relationship with Sam. Even…my relationship with God.
5. What do you want out of life?
To be the kind of wife Sam wants…Sam needs. To be a Godly woman.
6. What is the most important thing to you?
My family. A close second? My students. Especially poor Shamika. Poor, dear Shamika…
7. Do you read? If so, what is your favorite type of book to read?
Romance novels. The really smoochy but clean ones, like those HeartSong Presents type.
8. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
Truthfully…if I could just lose a few pounds, quit eating so much candy—Margaret, you’re not planning on telling anyone, are you? Uh-huh. That’s what I thought. You look really trustworthy on your website picture. To tell you the truth, I wish I could TELL the truth.
9. Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?
For the past four years, we just haven’t had time for a pet, with me and Sam working all the time. And then there’s Ed’s allergies. But if my suspension from MCC holds, I may need to get a pet to keep me from going crazy. I’ll head right to the Humane Society and find the homeliest, scrawniest little thing and scoop it up and take it to the pet store and blow the budget on a dozen different treats. Oh, that thing’ll think it died and has gone to heaven!
10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?
Ooh, what a fun question, Margaret! I’d just LOVE to wear those fancy ball dresses from the Victorian era. But I don’t think women could teach then, could do much of anything but get married and have—on second thought, I don’t think I’d like to go back to the Victorian period at all. I think I’m just fine right where I’m at.
