Denice Stewart has her first book coming out titled WHERE WOULD COWS HIDE?, a young adult mystery story. She is giving away a copy of her book in a drawing. Denice Stewart’s interview:
1. What made you start writing?

I was a ravenous reader as a kid, still am, and couldn’t imagine doing anything else in my life except being a writer. Although in the third grade I did want to be an archeologist. Winning a writing contest in high school that was sponsored by a nearby college sealed the deal.

2. How long have you been writing? When did you sell your first book?

I’ve been writing short stories since junior high, and jotting down ideas for novels since college. I sold my first book in 2005. It has taken almost two and a half years for it to be released.

3. How do you handle rejections?

Okay. No one is allowed to send hate mail or shoot me, but this is was my first novel ever, and it sold to the first publisher I sent it to. I know this NEVER happens, but I just fell into some strange parallel universe and it happened.

4. Why do you write?

Because the characters in my head won’t leave me alone until I give them a page to play on.

5. What would you be doing with your free time if you weren’t writing?

Reading, and wishing I was writing.

6. What are you working on right now?

I am waiting to hear from my publisher about the second book in this (hopefully) series, plotting book three, and also working on an adult romantic comedy that I entered in the ACFW Genesis contest.

7. Do you put yourself into your books/characters?

Not so much myself, but I put everyone I KNOW in them. If you’ve met me, don’t be surprised if you find some story you’ve told me flying out of a character’s mouth, who looks an awful lot like you, too.

8. Tell us about the book you have out right now.

Where Would Cows Hide? tells the story of identical eleven year old twins, Brad and Charlie Parker, their eight year old sister Zoey, and their adventures on Grandpa and Grandma’s cattle ranch. The children arrive for a two week vacation and discover rustlers have been stealing their grandparents’ prized bulls. The twins offer to “help” and cause more trouble in the process.

9. Do you have any advice for other writers?

Write. Write what you love to read, and write often. Life gets in the way, always, but don’t let it stop you. When you feel the desire to create from the roots of your hair to the tips of your toes, write.

10. How important is faith in your books?

To quote a friend of mine, “Kids need a really BIG God.” And if you’re going to have an adventure, why not have the BIGGEST adventure of all? With the BIGGEST being in all the universe and beyond?

11. What themes do you like to write about?

Just because you don’t understand it, doesn’t make it not true. In all the Parker Twins books, the kids will struggle to understand their faith. We all struggle with our faith from time to time, but even when we don’t understand what God is asking us to do, or making us go through, doesn’t mean He doesn’t have a good reason for it. It doesn’t mean His word is not true.

12. What is your favorite book you’ve written and why?

Well, so far my favorite book is actually the second book in the Parker Twins series, though it’s not yet published. I don’t want to give the book away, but I will say I enjoyed writing about a miracle and making the impossible, possible.

13. What is your writing schedule like?
I have three children under the age of five. I write whenever, wherever I can, and it’s still never enough time. But it doesn’t mean I don’t keep trying.

Thank you so much, Margaret, for letting me be a guest on your blog. It’s been great!
