Interview with the hero from Down Squash Blossom Road by Janet Chester Bly:

1.  Soren Patrick, tell me the most interesting thing about you.

I spend a lot of time in the sun training and breeding horses at a ranch in New Meadows, Idaho. And I pilot a helicopter—sometimes to help with the mail route in the wilderness region near me, but mostly to fly to auctions to buy horses, such as in Las Vegas.

2.  What do you do for fun?

I pluck at a guitar, even though I’m not very good at it. I find that relaxing and helps with the occasional creep of loneliness. I also love watching stock or sports car races, whenever I get a chance, as well as horse racing.

3. What do you put off doing because you dread it?

Taking down the silver framed photo on the wall in my home of me with former girlfriend, Valery, with the long, straight honey-brunette hair. Or getting rid of the engagement ring she returned to me. Somehow those actions would make our split more permanent than I want it to be. However, there is the very interesting, feisty redhead Reba Mae Cahill. Just perhaps …

4.  What are you afraid of most in life?

Never having a ranch that belongs to me. Right now I run a ranch for a wealthy owner who’s gone most of the time. Sometimes I forget the place is not mine. While I appreciate the privilege, I hope some day to purchase my own property and train and breed my own horses. That’s my dream.

5.  What do you want out of life?

Now that I’m a Christian, I want to serve God through my horse training skills or however else the Lord wants to use me. I’m hoping to start a men’s Bible study in my town or something like that. Waiting for a chance to do some sort of ministry.

6.  What is the most important thing to you?

To be stronger in my faith and to find a wife who shares that same faith. The reason Valery and I broke up is because she didn’t understand nor appreciate my desire to follow Jesus. We quarreled about it often. That was such a huge change in my life. We could weather our other differences, but not that one.

7.  Do you read books? If so, what is your favorite type of book?

My girlfriend, Valery, gave me my first Dick Francis British mystery novel with the horse racing theme. I’ve been hooked ever since. I’ve got a couple hot rod books around too. That’s about it. Oh, except the Bible, of course.

8.  If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

Well, if pressed, I guess it’s my eating habits. I’m a bone-in steak man. I could eat that at every meal. And I love bacon. My neighbor, Hester Vaughan, mothers me a lot and urges me to eat more fish and chicken. She says she worries about my health. But I know a gal who is a vegetarian and eats nothing but salads and veggies. She seems to always be tired and keeps breaking bones. Give me the beef!

9.  Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?

All my horses could be considered pets. My favorite right now is a handsome buckskin with black mane and tail who’s prancing around the pasture right now. He also has an interesting history. He played a role in Operation Desert Storm in the Gulf War and returned with a kind of PTSD. Very skittish. Someone needs to take the time to work with him. He could be a great horse again. A certain redhead gal I know would be perfect for him.

10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?

I’d love to live when Jesus walked on earth. To follow him and his disciples around would be the most incredible experience. To be there at the most crucial moments of human history and discover how I’d respond. Who would I be in that crowd … faithful like John? Or a coward like Peter? I don’t know. Makes me tremble to think about it.
