Summer is a time for vacations, cooking out, tending the gardens, going swimming, staying inside with the air conditioner going because it is one hundred degrees outside, dieting and exercising to get into that bathing suit (probably should have done this one in the spring), and reading books (hopefully on a beach). I’m going on a vacation with my husband this summer and hope to read tons of books I haven’t had a chance to while working. Well, probably not tons but at least three or four. I love to read but have been writing so much lately that I haven’t had a chance to read as many stories as I want.
I’m also looking forward to spending time with my four granddaughters this summer. They are growing up so fast. I can’t believe the oldest is going to be in the 4th grade this fall and my youngest is walking and running everywhere now, getting into everything. She keeps me in condition. Best exercise around.
I have some good news to share with you all. I recently sold five books to Steeple Hill—2 Love Inspired Suspense and 3 Love Inspired books. I’m working on the first one and will have the rough draft done this week. It is the second book in my Guardians, Inc. Series for Love Inspired Suspense about female bodyguards. The first one in the series, Christmas Bodyguard, will be out in December.
My July Love Inspired book, Heart of a Cowboy, the second in the Helping Hands Homeschooling Series, is on the shelves now in a lot of stores. Its blurb is:
Ten years ago Jordan Masterson left her hometown heartbroken—and pregnant. Now, yearning for connection with her family, the single mother returns to Tallgrass, Oklahoma. But she’s shocked to find her son’s father—unaware he has a child—a vital part of the community. Zachary Rutgers owns the ranch that the local homeschoolers use for riding and recreation. Which means little Nicholas, Jordan and Zachary will be spending a lot of time together. Jordan must tell Zachary the truth about their son—and ask for answers herself. Hoping the heart of her cowboy will still be hers for the taking.
Summer Pasta Salad (This salad gets better the second time around—great leftovers.):
- ¾ cup of ranch dressing
- 8 oz. pasta (You can experiment to see which one you like the best.)
- 1 cup of broccoli florets
- 1 cup of artichoke hearts, quartered
- 1 zucchini, diced
- ½ red onion, thinly sliced
- ½ cup frozen peas, thawed
- 1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved
- ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
- ¼ cup pitted and halved black olives
- (You can add a large can of tuna or chicken, and I usually double the recipe.)
Cook pasta according to package directions. Place broccoli in a strainer; drain cooked pasta in same strainer. Run cool water over all and drain well. Transfer pasta and broccoli to a serving bowl. Add ranch dressing and remaining ingredients and toss gently to coat.
Serve and store covered in refrigerator until serving time. You can serve over lettuce or spinach or by itself.
I recently had a writer asked me about whether she should have a prologue in her book. My advice is if you decide to have one it should be short, compelling and occur well before the story opens in chapter one. Essentially a prologue is back story so you should be sure it is important for the reader to know and that you should show it in real time.
